Rome IV score

Previous version of the criteria for disorders of gut-brain interaction

The Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaires constitute a family of modules, not a single score. They translate into standardized questions the symptom-based criteria for various disorders of gut-brain interaction: esophageal, gastroduodenal, bowel, abdominal pain, and anorectal disorders, among others.

Terms of contract

Self-administered questionnaires for adults; for children, separate paediatric versions are completed by a parent or, from the age of 10, by the child. Select modules according to the reason for presentation and use the licensed version without modifying it. Reference periods vary depending on the module (e.g. the last 3 months, with onset at least 6 months ago, for irritable bowel syndrome). Historical overview dedicated to Rome IV (2016). The Rome Foundation has launched Rome V. The IV and V criteria are not interchangeable; this page retains its /rome-iv address and does not reproduce any licensed questionnaires.

Score interpretationRome IV

No overall score: each module applies its own conditional diagnostic logic, rather than a simple sum.

Symptomatic criteria do not preclude the search for red flags, differential diagnoses, and organic causes where relevant.
